The Spotlight Effect
I was one of the crores of viewers last night that witnessed the Indian batting line-up choke up against South Africa in the Super-8 stage of the World Cup.
Put yourself in the shoes of these guys. Crores of viewers for each match. Every mistake gets endlessly criticized on social media. Every Tom, Dick and Harry has an expert opinion.
And yet, they show up. They put in their best. And they keep their focus on the path forward. They know that the critics will shut up when they win. They know the fans have a short memory span. No one remembers the last time someone got a duck. Everyone remembers the glory of lifting the cup.
If these guys, who are mere humans, put themselves in the arena day in and day out–we have nothing to lose. You probably don’t have any obsessive fans and critics don’t even know you exist yet. You have no one else to disappoint yet. Except yourself.
